About this landmark
Nestled in the heart of England's famed Lake District, Ullswater near Penrith in Cumbria is a shimmering jewel among a landscape celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty. Unlike any other body of water in the region, Ullswater offers a unique pyriform shape, stretching nearly 9 miles and bordered by sweeping glacial valleys and the striking Helvellyn mountain range. Its mirror-like surface reflects the changing skies and surrounding mountains, creating a canvas that has enchanted poets like Wordsworth, who penned 'I wandered lonely as a cloud' after inspiration from the daffodils along its shores.
Ullswater is not only a feast for the eyes; it's a haven for a variety of outdoor activities, from gentle lakeside strolls to exhilarating water sports. At the northern tip, the small village of Pooley Bridge offers charming local shops and cozy cafes, serving as a gateway to this natural paradise. Unique geological formations like the Howtown Ridge provide vantage points that reveal the lake's full expanse, inviting visitors to pause and admire the serene landscape. The lake is home to diverse wildlife, including red squirrels and rare flora, making it a living gallery of the local ecosystem. Steeped in history, Ullswater's waters are interwoven with local legends, such as those of the medieval knight Lancelot, adding a touch of myth to its already magical allure.
